Sea Defences & Flood Protection Schemes
As our water margins are being developed for marinas, water sports, beach leisure and other pursuits, so demands upon coastal and river regions are increasing, and the work to preserve these areas has to be maintained.
New European Directives require beach quality to be of a high standard for the general public. Sea walls, breakwaters revetments and groynes all seek to protect the coast from erosion and sediment transport and retain sand on our beaches. These have to be built on solid foundations, so geophysical surveys are used to assess the bottom and sub-bottom material. If these structures are of rock brought in by sea, the trans-shipment path has to be surveyed prior to and after the work to identify possible obstructions left on the seabed which may pose a potential hazard to fishing and shipping.
Bedlevels, both onshore and offshore should be monitored where there is a possibility of either natural or man-made changes occurring. The addition or removal of structures in the coastal zone alters water flow and sediment migration, and exposes or protects lengths of beach and cliff. Regular surveys of these changes helps to warn of damage and predict changes elsewhere.
Changes to river courses can alter the water flow downstream. Cross-sectional surveys and flow measurement show a river's maximum volume. This is used to assess it's transportation capability, any flood prevention measures that maybe required and which design would produce the best corrective action.
